Many customers ask us if they need to buy an expansion vessel with their unvented water heater tank purchase. The answer is Yes or No. As water heats in the tank it expands. This expansion can cause the heater tanks, connections or pipes to fracture and split, causing a catastrophic failure of the heater.

So, you need to consider your setup and you may (or may not) need an SF3 expansion vessel kit.

Note: Expansion vessels are not required if you have a vented tank or instantaneous water heater, regardless of its size and capacity, you do NOT need an expansion vessel. This is because an instantaneous water heater does not store any water and so there is nothing to expand and the vented tanks will vent from the vented taps or spout outlet so are an open outlet system.

You only need to check if an expansion vessel is required if you are purchasing an unvented water heater.

For 30 litres or more, you will need an expansion vessel every time, usually these size tanks will have a vessel packaged with the water heater when you buy it.

If the unvented water heater is less than 30 litres, then this is the only time you need to check your install.

The Check is as follows. You need to measure the distance of the pipework from the cold inlet of the water heater to…

 1. the nearest cold water draw off “Cold Tap” OR
 2. the nearest check valve “non-return valve” which is one way so will stop reverse flow.

NOTE: So… You are measuring the pipe length from the cold inlet, usually to the nearest cold tap. Sometimes from a previous install there may be a check valve which would also affect the backflow. These should be removed if you are not using a vessel. Or left on if you are fitting a vessel.

This run of pipe will need to be a certain length depending on your tank capacity. It will expand and take strain away from the tank as the water heats up and pushes back down the cold pipe.

Recommended lengths of cold pipe from cold inlet on tank to nearest cold tap is as follows:

5 litre water heater – 1.4 metres of 15mm pipework from tank to tap.

10 litre water heater – 2.8 metres of 15mm pipework from tank to tap.

15 litre water heater – 4.2 metres of 15mm pipework from tank to tap.

If your cold line pipe-run is less than this, you will need an expansion vessel kit. See SF3 on our search bar.

They come with a check valve to stop the water expanding past it thus forcing it into the expansion vessel. The SF4 option kit also come with a pressure reducing valve for high water pressure areas where your mains IN water pressure is above 4bar approx. The SF4 kits are essential in preventing any high water pressure filling your expansion vessel even before your water heater is switched on.

<![CDATA[Paper Hand Towels, Electric hand Dryers or Hand Sanitiser?]]> https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/paper-hand-towels-electric-hand-dryers-or-hand-sanitiser https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/paper-hand-towels-electric-hand-dryers-or-hand-sanitiser Fri, 05 Dec 2014 00:00:00 GMT Paper Towels or Electric Hand Dryers or Hand Sanitisers?

Germs and diseases are spread by our hands and effective hand washing remains our best line of defence. Next step hand drying?

From a hygienic point of view when comparing paper towels, cloth towels or hot air dryers, which is the best? Straight away we can remove cloth towels as they and most certainly not hygienic.

The key factors would be hand drying effectiveness, the speed of drying, the degree of dryness and the cross contamination of bacteria.

It appears that the general public would prefer paper towels with approx 75% in favour of these as apose to the remaining 25% in favour of warm air electric hand dryers.

Reasons being paper towels are superior to electric hand dryers by drying hands thoroughly with one use and is thought of as a method of improving hand hygiene and cross contamination.

Paper towels also seem to be more efficient with reasons given such as electric hand dryers were much slower and required realistically two goes or approx 45 seconds to reduce the residual water to an considered dry level.

With cloth towels being the least effective method of removing bacteria from washed hands it appears that electric hand dryers were second. It is not so much a case that electric hand dryers are a poor choice too but rather that when using a fresh new paper hand towel, studies have found that friction is the key factor in the hand drying action as it helps to remove contamination on the skin surface by transferring remaining bacteria from the hands to the paper towels.

People will only attain a certain amount of time to hand drying before walking away. If the results were not good they will wipe their hands on their clothes or touch door handles with wet hands. So realistically we have to be sensible or you could go on forever with concerns over something simple such as drying your hands. For example. Every time a toilet is flushed, a fine mist can be sprayed into the air from the WC bowl. This mist may contain may types of faecal bacteria that can cause diseases. The same bacteria would be present on the toilet and cubicle door and lock. The tap handle. The soap dispenser. The damp environment of the washrooms with allow bacteria to thrive.

The bacteria can then be inhaled or can be deposited on the person's body or clothes, thus making them a potential mobile source of infection.

I think we have to look at hand washing as a cleaning practice. Sanitation is a separate issue so after drying and other cross-contamination that will quickly occur after a hand wash. The answer is regular hand sanitation. Wall mounted or pocket sized. Alcohol or alcohol free. This is a perfect solution and a habit that needs to be adopted before eating and handling food of in zones of other people where cross-contamination will be high.

This is just our thoughts on the subject but as with most things it is all down to personal preference!

<![CDATA[What is the environmentally friendly solution to restroom hygiene?]]> https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/what-is-the-environmentally-friendly-solution-to-restroom-hygiene https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/what-is-the-environmentally-friendly-solution-to-restroom-hygiene Tue, 06 May 2014 00:00:00 GMT

Within restrooms there a number of different solutions to manage hand hygiene but it is vital that you choose the most effective and hygienic option. A traditional electric hand dryer is a very popular choice but do they provide an environmentally friendly solution?

Firstly, the other options available need to be investigated. Many businesses use paper towels as an alternative. These are often cited as the environmentally friendly option but is this true? Research conducted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that paper towels (even recycled ones) actually have a large carbon footprint if you take into account the towels full life from manufacture to disposal. This carbon footprint was found to be around the same as for an electric hand dryer. They were also found in landfill sites meaning they will have an environmental impact for years to come. These disposable paper towels are hygienic as they are used once then disposed of, but if the bin overfills this will look messy and if there is bacteria on the towels they may spread.

In some establishments they use hand towels. Although these look nice and can feel luxurious they appear to be a breeding ground for bacteria. These towels are used multiple times by multiple people so any germs or bacteria people have on their hands are easily transferred to the towel. They can then multiply so the next person cleans their hands but then picks up bacteria from the towel. Theses towels will require regular washing which uses not only electricity but water too. This again is problematic when considering restroom hygiene and environmental impact.

The final solution is the electric hand dryer. These have received criticism for wasting energy but as already discussed, using a traditional electric hand dryer has no more carbon footprint than using a paper towel. It is certainly more hygienic than a paper towel so this would appear to be a good choice. However, there have been advances in electric hand dryers which offer an environmentally friendly solution with superior hygiene.

Newer technology such as the “blade” models of hand dryer are in fact more energy efficient and give a faster drying experience than traditional electric hand dryers. This is good for the environment but also cuts down on your energy bills. All you are required to do is pop your hands into the drier and it starts to blow air, forcing the water from your hands. As you don’t have to press a switch or button there is no need to touch any surfaces so the likelihood of germs or bacteria spreading is greatly reduced. These new hand dryers are a little more expensive to purchase but will be a good investment for the future.

You will also be concerned with making sure that the kitchen is correctly fitted out with the very best equipment so that you can prepare world-class dishes that will boost your sales. However, it is very important not to forget about your restrooms as this is the place which will really expose any gaps in your hygiene standards.Restroom hygiene is vital and adding details such as sanitary bins is absolutely crucial if you want to ensure that your customers feel safe and clean.

Not only should you ensure that sanitary bins and hand dryers come as standard, but you should also make sure that the restroom has been decorated to a very high standard. Fresh flowers should always be on display and clean hand towels should be on offer too for those who prefer using them to hand dryers. Your mirrors, floors, walls and ceilings should be in impeccable condition and of course you should always ensure that there is a generous supply of toilet paper. If you wish to add vending machines containing useful products then this is a great option too. Make sure that the locks on each cubicle door are in good working order and ensure that there is a daily cleaning schedule with hourly inspections to make sure the space is always looking its best.

Having sanitary bins and hand dryers makes your customers see that you take restroom hygiene incredibly seriously, and this is very important for business. Of course you need to be completely sure that the sanitary bins will be regularly emptied so make sure that this is part of your cleaning contract. No matter how hard you work, it only takes one bad customer comment to send diners off to your competitors. And once you get a reputation for poor hygiene it can be extremely hard to shake.

So if you are working on the restrooms in your restaurant, make sure that you have gone the extra mile when it comes to hygiene. The experts at Easy Hygiene are here to help and advise you on the best products for your outlet and they will also be able to advise you on installation and maintenance. <![CDATA[Are Hand dryers the right choice for small businesses?]]> https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/are-hand-dryers-the-right-choice-for-small-businesses https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/are-hand-dryers-the-right-choice-for-small-businesses Wed, 05 Mar 2014 00:00:00 GMT If you are setting up your own small business, or are moving your business into a new building you will no doubt have a hundred and one tasks to complete (most of them with a deadline of about an hour ago!) Making the decision of whether to opt for electric hand dryers or not may not seem like a pressing matter. So we have put together this article to highlight the pros and cons, in order for you to make the decision that is right for your company.

For many business owners the impact that their enterprise has on the environment is an increasing concern. While any device that utilises electricity to function incurs a level of environmental effect, in terms of generating the electricity, this impact is less than the equivalent impact int he production, transportation and disposal of paper towels.

Another aspect that may put people of installing electric hand dryers is the noise produced. With the cost of space continuing to increase, utilising the full area of your building is imperative in driving cost efficiency. As such there is more than likely to be office space in the vicinity of the toilet block. However, due to innovations in technology, you can opt to have a quiet hand dryer installed. While there will still be a degree of noise, it should not disturb the atmosphere in adjacent rooms.

Many people when asked about the negatives of hand dryers while often resort to the statement that they actually spread germs. However, when put in context, this does not make a coherent argument against the installation of dryers. As the flush of a toilet produces far more airborne bacteria than the hand dryer, yet no one is going to suggest banning flushes. As paper towels are usually located in the wash room area, they will also be open to harbouring the same germs.

Here at Easy Hygiene, we have a great range of washroom products including a selection of hand dryers. Why not contact a member of our helpful team int order to discuss your requirements when equipping your staff toilets.

<![CDATA[Sanitary bins are vital for the health and safety of your premises.]]> https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/sanitary-bins-are-vital-for-the-health-and-safety-of-your-premises https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/sanitary-bins-are-vital-for-the-health-and-safety-of-your-premises Wed, 05 Feb 2014 00:00:00 GMT When you are designing the layout of the washrooms in your premises, it is really important to make sure that every last detail has been thought about. It is absolutely vital that you make sure that your washrooms are easy to keep clean – as if your customers think that your health and safety is not up to scratch they will go elsewhere. There is nothing more off-putting than a washroom that is dirty and that is not regularly cleaned. So, in order to avoid alienating your customers, you must make sure that sanitary bins are available.

Sanitary bins provide a clean and safe way to dispose of sanitary items. Not only do they make customers feel far more comfortable in your washroom, but they also serve to protect your plumbing system from blockages. As anybody that has had to deal with blocked pipes will tell you, this is a very expensive thing to fix – and your services will be out of action until the repairs have been carried out and the blockages are removed.

It is also important to think about the other little extras that your customers will appreciate. For example, parents will be especially thankful if you have a wall mounted baby changing station available. It is very hard to change a child’s nappy while you are out and about, so parents of young children will be very happy to find that you have provided this for their needs. You should also make sure that electric water heaters are installed in order to make sure that hot water is available on demand. On top of the functional additions, it is also nice to consider how else you could make the washroom a pleasant place to be. For example, could you install air fresheners or even have some fresh flowers on display? These little additions make big differences to the overall feel of the room.

When you have sanitary bins available in your washroom, you will also need to make arrangements for them to be collected and emptied regularly. Otherwise, if the bins are overflowing, your customers will be very put off. There are specialist companies available who will

visit regularly and make sure that the bins are emptied – make this part of your company’s cleaning routine.

Here at Easy Hygiene there’s nothing we don’t know about hygiene at work, so why not give us a call or browse our washroom equipment page to find out more?

<![CDATA[Cheap electric hand dryers, a useful money saving tool for rest rooms]]> https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/cheap-electric-hand-dryers-a-useful-money-saving-tool-for-rest-rooms https://www.easyhygiene.co.uk/blog/post/cheap-electric-hand-dryers-a-useful-money-saving-tool-for-rest-rooms Wed, 05 Feb 2014 00:00:00 GMT

It’s no joke that everyone across the world is feeling the pinch at current with businesses being no different. Finding cost saving tricks and tools is therefore important. If your business has a public restroom, here’s a few few simple ideas you can introduce to help save the pennies.

Cheap electric hand dryers are one option. Hand towels are these days seen as being unhygienic and wasteful for the environment. The cost of constantly restocking towels along with the removal of dirty towels can add up over the course of a year. If you’re using an older cheap electric hand dryer purchased a few years ago, now is the time to upgrade to a more economical version.

Another method of saving money would be to install sensors so lights are automatically switched on when a customer enters the restroom, and are turned off when a customer exits.

Having soap dispensers able to dispense the optimum amount of soap and placed in ideal places will prevent drips and over excessive use of soap.

In the gents restroom, often the urinals are left constantly flushing. Installing a urinal water management system can help save up to 90% of water wastage. Through either infra red or motion sensors, they detect when the washroom has been used and initiates a flush.

Having taps with a press down facility can also help reduce water wastage. Similar to the soap dispensers, it’s essential they are set at correct levels ensuring water is running for an optimum time only.

Alternatively, think about installing an electric hand wash water heater. These offer instanteous warm water are highly energy efficient due to the fact they only consume energy when they are used rather than having to have warm water in your system 24 hours a day.

Here’s just a few suggestions of how to save the pennies. Don’t forget the saving in energy and reducing water wastage by utilising these simple tricks helps not only your pocket, but also the environment.
